  [ EN ] During the colonial period the native school in Madagascar was used as one of the means to set up the regime. The State schools were to provide the settlers qualified but cheap labour ; and it was out of them that those pupils that were trained to become administration auxiliaries came. Lastly they had to face the rivalry of the religious schools, which all wanted to take in charge a population that was considered as backward.
  The pilot-schools, which were created in 1919 with an agricultural orientation, allowed the spreading of new crops and cultivation techniques in rural areas and the teaching of monitarized exchange to the peasants. Whereas the activities of the pilot school in Mitongoa, in the district of Fianarantsoa gave the administration satisfaction, they, on the other hand, were source of discontent, and, at times, of decrease in school attendance. For agricultural work as well as school building maintenance constituted a heavy burden for the pupils and their parents and were considered as unbearable forced labour.
