  [ EN ] Apart form the sorabe (which constitute a particular area of study in this respect), it is rare that Malagasy sources are subjected to the exercise of linguistic criticism. The letter of Tsiomeko to Louis-Phillipe, king of France (1840), provides an interesting case. The original letter – a rather important deed since it has been considered as the legal foundation of possession of Nosy-Be by the French seems to have disappeared from the archives. However, one copy made by the ship’s physician who had kept the letter has been recently re-discovered. A linguistic analysis of this document allows to formulate a few assumptions as to the drafting : the way language is handled suggests that at least certain parts of the document had not been formulated by a native Malagasy speaker.
