[ EN ] The Malagasy system of astronomy, wholly empiric and unrelated to any scientific rule, was closely associated to an inclusive form of astrology, in step with social, economic and political life ; indeed it brought together the awareness of time as being a favorable or unfavorable destiny and the awareness of cosmic and domestic space. And so, quite a revolutionary event occurred when, in February 1864 the first almanach with the year’s Gregorian occidental calendar was published and put to circulation. The Missions “have changed time” with actual time and oral civilization giving place to scientific time and written civilization. The political implication is obvious with the interruption, since 1862, of the celebration of the Malagasy New Year and national day, the Fandroana, on the one hand and the prospect of its substitution by Christian festivities as indicated in the new calendar on the other. Thus, the almanach denies a cosmic order to which society was to keep to so as to be able to carry on.
This emplied revolutionary aspect of the almanach can also be seen in the part illustrating the English political system and the idea of a constitutional pact between sovereign and nation. Finally the same meaning can be traced in the remembrance of important events in the History of Madagascar : Malagasy history as it is seen by the English protestants essentially boils down to the history of foreign interventions, which merely emphasizes the Malagasy Christians beliefs that henceforth it was they who fashioned and would fashion the history of their country.

[ MLA ] Tsy mba niankina velively tamina fandinihana siantifika ny fanandroana malagasy nefa kosa tena nahenika ny fiainana manontolo ka nibaiko ny fiaraha-monina sy famokarana ary ny fiainana ara-politika aza. Hainy mantsy ny nandrindra hatrany ny zava-niseho teo amin’ny fiainana – na tsara izany na ratsy – tamin’ny zava-nisy nanodidina azy. Hany ka tsapany fa nivadika tokoa ny rasa raha natonta sy naely teto Antananarivo ny alimanaka gregoriana tandrefana voalohany tamin’ny 1864 : “nakorontan’ny Misiona ity ny fiainana”. Nifarana hatreo ny andron’ny lovantsofina, nisosoka kosa ny andron’ny fahalalana voarakitra an-tsoratra. Vao tamin’ny taona 1862, dia efa tsinjo sahady ny fiantraikan’izany ara-politika, raha nahantona ny fankalazana ny Fandroana, taom-baovao sady fetim-pirenena malagasy, ka noheverina ny hanoloana izany firavoravoana kristiana araka izay hita ao amin’ilay alimanaka. Notsipahin’ilay alimanaka izany ilay firindran’izao rehetra izao, niankinan’ny Malagasy mba hitohizan’ny fiainany hatrany.
Nanosika tamin’izany fiovam-penitra izany koa ny famelabelarana hita tao mikasika ny rafitra politika tany Angletera sy ny lalam-panorenana nifanarahan’ny Andriamanjaka tamin’ny vahoaka. Ary mbola izany ihany koa no tsapa raha namaky ireo fitanisana ny vanim-potoana lehibe teo amin’ny tantaran’i Madagasikara. Ny mpitondra fivavahana anglisy tokoa mantsy no nifantina ireny. Hany ka voafetra tamin’ny resaka momba ny fidiran’ny vahiny teto Madagasikara ihany izany ka nandetika tao an-tsain’ny Malagasy kristiana hatrany ny fiheveran-tena ho hany manao sy hanao ny tantaram-pireneny.
