    [ EN ] Evangelisation of the malagasy coasts was regarded as secundary by the christian missionary churches. During the XIXth century and up to the 1930’s ; the centre of the island was the area they regarded as being of strategic importance. The author analyses the reasons behind such a choice, the main being the existence in Antananarivo of a monarchy trying to exercise control all over the island. British and French missionaries thought that the extension of that monarchy was the best means to help Christian penetration in the other regions – the catholic example is more particularly studied here. It was through the conversion of Antananarivo that the Christian movement was to be started. The Toamasina area only gets a drop of the social and spiritual efforts undertaken by the church in the central area. Up to the end of the first Franco-Malagasy war (1885) the few catholic missionaries residing in Betsimisaraka capital only spoke to the foreign population in Toamasina (particularly the creole and French populations), and activities within the Betsimisaraka country were few.
    This socio-religious situation is described with the help of a documentation (unpublished so far for the most part) showing on the one hand the socio-cultural facts of the Betsimisaraka country and, on the other hand the mind the missionaries were in and the mental categories they belonged to. This preference shown by the Christian churches towards the populations of the centre of the island helps explain the regional varieties which, every today, are not only religious.
