  [ EN ] The outbreak of banditry in the Tulear region at the beginning of the 1980s undoubtedly explains why the memories of the bandits of the beginning of this century were then brought back to light. Our attention was directed to this question by a notable of Tuléar, now deceased, who, on his own initiative, had collected and recorded in writing, in 1982, a narrative on the doings of a famous bandit, Mahatoritsy, at the beginning of this century. This narrative has been collated with other oral memories, and to data of the colonial archives on the same figure. The collation of two types of sources allows to have a grasp of the memory’s work, the interpretations and re-interpretations of facts from the recent past.
