[ EN ] By the end of the 19th century and early in the 20th century the colonizers did not look quite innocently upon the different regional groups of Madagascar. The French, who before 1895 and again at least until 1897, regarded the Merina as their principal opponents, were inclined to draw a comparatively favourable portrait of the Betsileo. For the Betsileo were believed to be hostile to the Merina who had formerly defeated them and encroached on their kingdoms and it was beyond doubt that they (the Betsileo) would consider the French as their deliverers. It was then essential that they should intensify their friendly feelings. Yet, from the beginning, Dr Besson, the Representative of France in the Betsileo region as far back as 1888, showed great reserve out of simple europeocentrism. And when the colonial regime had been steadily implanted and the problem of the Merina, solved, severity prevailed over the Betsileo among all the French officials, first of all the governor general Gallieni. After they had been allies, the Betsileo became subjects and it was difficult for them to get integrated into the new system ; their shortcomings were then especially exposed.
