  [ EN ] According to Maurice Bloch traditional anthropological kinship terminology is not well suited to describe Malagasy kinship systems. Given this difficulty, the author proposes two alternative modes of investigation : symbolic organization and political and economic organization. The author illustrates the second approach by using the Malata of the Betsimisaraka as an example. In short, this work draws the attention of historians to the necessity of sociology in the research of the past.
