  [ EN ] The near monopoly of education by British Protestant missionaries accounts for the fierce struggle which dominated politics and education on the Central Highlands of Madagascar from 1905 to 1910. The fundamentally non-religious colonial government which was born of the French Third Republic and largely composed of freemasons belonging to the Grand Orient de France, exacerbated the conflict. Even today, Masonic interference in the process of secularization cannot be clearly established. But the influence of the lodges nay, of the obediences, surreptitious as it might have been, seems particurlaly unquestioned in the privileged field of education.
