  [ EN ] The still living though taboo today memory of the ancient social hierarchies is a good means to find the history of the foko. The case of the Zazamena shows the problems posed by a foko, specially the definition of this notion itself. The etymology of Zazamena, “red child” or “child to whom something is given”, drives to see in it a group of princely dependants or princes getting no direct access to power. At the end of the XVIIIth century, this group took charge to defend the southern borders of Isandra in front of southern and eastern betsileo kingdoms. In one tradition, the ancestor of the group is a merina prince descendant from Andriamasinavalona. This type of group to which is proposed the term of firazañana could be found again in other parts of Madagascar (Antesaka).
