  [ EN ] An important expansion of Zanzibarians in East Africa characterized the second half of the nineteenth century. Their impact on local societies in Buganda and Manyema (East of Zaire) was very remarkable, whereas it was practically insignificant in Burundi where only the borders of Lake Tanganyika became converted to Islam. The Swahili society was seriously fought by German and Belgian colonization : various administrative persecutions didn’t let the muslim trading become prosperous. Even if it actively contributed to the search of independence in 1962, it only takes the second position today because of its numerical weakness.
