  [ EN ] The Merina history period began with the first european testimony is enriched with new texts the public did not know about up to now.
  This article is attempting to go back over the biography of Lebel, a french negociator at he end of the eighteenth century and trying to rediscover that man’s activity periods in Madagascar and his various itinerary in the island from every known document. Lebel reached the High Lands between 1801 and 1803 and left us two accounts of his stay from which we could get one, the one transcribed in Mauritius island in 1816 at the regnest of Governor Farqhar. That text is presented here with all the necessary critical device, preceded by a letter from Lebel dated 20th May 1802, in which be announced his plan to make a journey to Imerina and solicited the Mauritius island governor’s support. Although Lebel did not meet Andrianampoinimerina personally not did he certainly go to Antananarivo not even to Ambohimanga, he travelled all over the South of Imerina and witnessed some very important events. This fact gives his evidence a great value for the history of Imerina, turning point in the XIXth century.
