[EN] It is difficult for the scholar, and notably the geographer, to find in Madagascar large-scale maps for regional studies. And yet, the topographical service possesses a fairly rich fund of documents ; the author gives an account of the various documents available : maps of estates (grants and registered lands), old regional maps (maps showing the settlement areas and native reservations), lastly the cadastral documents, dating some thirty years back, and the more recent detailed surveys of the areas of intensive development (A.M.V.R.). The study of the value of such documents and of the conditions under which they can be used leads the author to set forth not only the technical aspects of their elaboration, but also the judicial system within which they are set, and, therefore, the various modes of land-ownership in Madagascar from conquest days down to the present time. The author presents the various plans for a general survey of Madagascar and analyses the problems raised by them.
