    [ EN ] The remoteness of the Maharivo valley enabled it to stay aloof from the succession of political centers in the Menabe. At the height of the Maroserana monarchy the region’s inhabitants did not hesitate to attack the Sakalava sovereigns’ cattle, but the benefits of such activities were to remain strictly clandestine. Since the Mahabo monarchy had allied itself with the Merina, cattle plundering became a patriotic activity which no longer required clandestiness. The wealthy mpanarivo could again appear in the lineage structures of the village power. The repression of cattle thefts by the colonial authority imposed again going under ground for a significant part of the village activities. The visible structures of the power correspond to the agro-pastoralist system of the valley and its immediate surroundings. The invisible structures remained important and were the main sources of the current hoarding process which favor the mpanarivo whose power relies upon networks of powerful, branched out and discreet clients.

Tena hita niverina teo anivon’ny rafi-pitondrana mitety arana teny an-tanàna indray ny mpanarivo.
