[EN] The Ankaratra highland villages, whose creation is fairly recent (even contemporary for some of them), are extremely original for Madagascar : on account of altitude, their lands are nowhere devoted to rice-growing ; the small farmers have two activities, the commercial monoculture of potatoes and the rearing of a humpless breed of horned cattle ; yet practically, the two activities are not related in any technical way whatever. On the soils of volcanic origin, the yielding of potatoes is at first excellent ; one can distinguish a zone of tany masaka, regularly manured, especially owing to movable cattle-pens, and a zone of tany mondra which is not manured, and where yielding is inferior. As long as villages and cultivated areas can be shifted about, all goes well ; but the increase of population and intensive farming lead to a dangerous lowering of the fertility of soils. The conditions of commercialization are very bad : transport by cart is difficult, and the collectors from the small town, Ambohibary, levy an excessive percentage. The author then describes three local examples : at Andranomangamanga, a recently peopled area, prosperity is real ; at Ambatondradama, a region of long-standing settlement, the situation is critical ; at Andofiakarana, after a period of considerable emigration, they turned to cattle-breeding. It is possible to imagine an evolution based on the introducing of fodder plants, if the technical departments decide to make a real effort.
