  [ EN ] The Betsimisaraka region witnesses an attempt at a political unification due to the influence of the pirates in the XVIIIth century. Paradoxically enough, the European pirates are a factor of political order and cultural contacts with more positive results than the traditional dealers. Thus a new group of half-caste appears progressively – the Malata – a group with a particular importance since they enjoy both the stranger’s prestige and the integration in the local society thanks to their Malagasy mothers. Consequently they play an important economic part as commercial middlemen. Yet, in spite of Ratsimilaho’s genius, they did not assume a leading role in a lasting way due to their diaspora and heterogeneity.
