  [ EN ] The Diego-Suarez bay was from 1885 a base of operations for the french Navy and a colony. The first catholic establishment was due to military chaplains. But it is canon Murat, native of La Réunion, who appears as the true founder of a catholic community mainly constituted by creoles with whom Murat, by his origins, get on well. Helped by some sisters, the parish grew until the second french-merina war which led to integrate Diego-Suarez in the new colony of Madagascar. Consequently, from 1898, the catholic mission was taken in hand by the “Spiritains”.
