  [ EN ] The Codes of Ranavalona I, Radama II and Rasoherina are the first written documents on Malagasy Law. They were meant to inform provincial governors of the law ruling Imerina and of the modes of its enforcement in their districts. As these documents have not been examined in their entirety before, this study will help us to assoss the evolution of the old Malagasy legislation for a period of thirty eight years from 1828 (Code of Ranavalona I) to 1866 (last version of the Code of Rasoherina). This span of time was marked by a succession of three completely different reigns and, regardless of the permanent features of Malagasy society, these codes express each sovereign’s ideas and concerns in term of legislation. They are mostly known through Gustave Julien’s translation into French. Many versions are kept at the Archives Nationales Malgaches. The original texts are reproduced as an appendix for further study.
