[EN] In this preliminary note A. Mille describes the method and the results concerning the study of settlement patterns in the Malagasy uplands of Imerina. Wherever there where no natural defences, the inhabitants of the past dug huge moats to protect their villages located on the higher part of the mountain. As from the beginning of nineteenth century many of these lofty sites were abandoned for the people lived closer to the irrigated rice-fields.
