[ EN ] Ethnic confrontations have always marked the regional history of the South-Eastern area of Madagascar and this, until very recently. Regardless of some traits of resemblance among the different local groups, reactions of identity have always been the main factors leading to such deadly conflicts. The apparent unity which seems to be existing in the immigration localities fades away when the preservation of the specificity and the defence of the territory, especially the ricefields, are at stake the Merina power of the 19th century and the French colonial power of the beginning of the 20th century have not eased the situation : only fear has motivated the acceptance of all foreign presence.
