[ EN ] A new kind of home called « vala » was introduced in the Betsileo region long before the Merina occupation, at the time of the kingdoms. It was built at the foot of the hills and in the vicinity of the rice-fields. The “vala” was mainly composed of a dwelling house and a cattle pen. It had two functions : to house the excess population from the hills and to allow them to be nearer the rice-fields so that they could enjoy the best yield conditions. It has developed owing to technical progress, to the introduction of new crops and to the will of the colonial authorities to maintain strict control over the population. However, its inhabitants have kept a multitude of religious, political, social links with their villages of origin.
