[ EN ] Doctor in the french navy, Louis Besson was sent to Madagascar at the Protectorate time and he was appointed to Fianarantsoa in 1886 as Vice-Résident.
He travelled a lot, cured the sick and become friendly to the populations owing to his “Kabary” which remained famous amoung the Betsileo, the Bara and the Tanala.
When the colonial administration was established he was appointed in 1896 as chief of the Province of Fianarantsoa. He spent the first years in pacification work principally among the Tanala. Promoted Administrator in chief of Colonies in 1897, he carried out an important work of administrative organization applied to a large country extending as far as Fort-Dauphin. He put order also in justice proceedings. After a leave in France, he spent few months as Chief of the Province of Tuléar and came back to Fianarantsoa. He was appointed again as chief of this province from 1903 to 1906. He undertook a new reorganization of the province. During that troubled period, he succeded in preventing the rising of the populations of the south to spread in this territory. He was a kind-hearted, generous and disinterested man. Before all, he was anxious to spare human lives during pacification operations. He did his best to restore public order and peace by persuading peoples owing to his eloquence and knowledge of malagasy language. With such qualities, this man was not spared from personal hardships nor from all kind of disappointment. On account of imperious financial shortage of Madagascar budget, he was pensioned-off at 51 years and left the island on the month of may 1906. It would have been desirable to maintain him on active service during many years on account of his brilliant qualities. Being a great traveler and a good observer, he has left a lot of remarquable works contributing to the knowledge of Betsileo and Tanala countries and of their inhabitants.

[ MLA ] Ny fiainan’i Dr. Besson no tantaraina ao anatin’ity lahatsoratr’i Raymond Delval ity. I Dr. Besson dia nianatra ho Dokotera tao amin’ny Ecole de Médecine Navale tao Toulon. Taty aoriana rehefa niasa taona maromaro tao amin’ny tafika an-dranomasina tao Toulon ihany izy dia notendrena ho Résident-n’i Fianarantsoa.
Nahay nifandray nifandray tamin’ny mponina izy, hany ka mamy hoditra tamin’ny vahoaka. Voatery nandao an’i Fianarantsoa anefa izy noho ny faharatsian’ny fifandraisana teo amin’ny Fitondrana frantsay sy malagasy tamin’ny 1894, nefa dia naverina ho Résident-Maire-n’i Toamasina tamin’ny 1895. Nony lasa zanatany i Madagasikara dia notendrena indray ho lehiben’ny Province-n’i Fianarantsoa izy. Nandry fehizay ny mponina. Na ilay tabataba tany atsimo atsinanana tamin’ny 1904 aza dia voasakany tsy hipaka tany amin’ny faritany niadidiany. Nefa tampotampoka teo dia nasaina hisotro ronono i Dr. Besson tamin’ny 1906. Ary maty tany Marseille izy tamin’ny 1941. Feno 86 taona izy tamin’izay.
