  [ EN ] Rice-growing is the principal activity of the Betsleo peasants. They assign 60% of their land and spend three-fourths of their time to the cultivation for rice. On the the other hand, coffee-growing holds the central place in the agriculture of the coastal regions of Fianarantsoa, and the vary tavy production (rice-growing in forest cuttings) is not sufficient for the consumption of the population. Between 1945 and 1960, the colonial government endeavoured to increase rice production to meet the needs both of the local population and of the export trade. Due to the extension of rice-cultivated area, production increased and was sufficient for the Malagasy people, but the quantity of exportable rice declined steadily. Furthermore, it was not the peasants who reaped the fruits of their labour but the middlemen, and this was also the reason of the large fluctuations in price of rice. As a result, the Betsileo peasants were compelled to work for wages somewhere else in order to complement their cash-income.
