  [ EN ] The example of Japon which, quite fortunately, has managed to reconcile tradition with modernism while preserving its independence, has fascinated the elite in Madagascar since the end of the nineteenth century. Thus, in 1899, Doctor Rajaonah, published an article on Japan and the Japanese in the Protestant review Ny Mpanolo-tsaina. From 1913 to 1915, Reverend Ravelojaona wrote on the same topic in the same review. In their opinion, there were many similarities in many fields between Japan and the great Island but their portrayal was actually an opportunity to talk about their own country. Through the representation given by these scholars, Japan was the idealized image of an enlightened independent Madagascar. Such a picture was appropriate, considering the foreigners’hold on the island. Anyway, whatever influence these texts might have on the collective consciousness in Madagascar, their echo was such that they truly appeared as classics of the Malagasy contemporary political literature.
