    [ EN ] In 1818, the London Missionary Society sent off two couples of missionaries in order to undertake evangelizing populations of the east coast. In fact, the L.M.S. had not planned things as they had happened. It would have prefered the Mission been started by bachelor missionaries. Infortunately, control of mission agents’matrimonial status escaped more and more the Directors of the Society, for this status depended on financial and moral considerations. The study of these considerations replaces these missionaries in their context at economical, demographical and social respects ; it replaces early XIXth century Missions in the genral stream of the Humanitarian movement for the education of the bulk of working people which started from the XVIIIth century.
    Missionary contact, in Tamatave or in Antananarivo, was not a shock of cultures, a sudden intrusion of the Occident into a different world, peculiarly concerning the women. As regards many aspects, the demographical one notably, the malagasy women and the white women were very closely similar. The screen between them came from the double role assigned by their husbands to the missionary wives : an educational one reduced to houseworks and one oriented to edification which is perhaps the starting point motive of missionaries wanting to be married before their arrival on mission field.
