  [ EN ] Dr Besson was vice-resident of France at Fianarantsoa from 1888 to 1894. Physician highly devoted to local populations, he gained awide esteem and let a memory still living today. During this period, France was trying to colonize Madagascar. As a matter of fact, Dr Besson’s “humanism” was a part of a conquest plan. There was first a project of invasion through the south-east, then the French wanted to avoid a possible withdrawal of merina government in Fianarantsoa. Besson’s reports are very clear on the failure of merina policy in the Betsileo province both subject to official duties and to Bara’s looting raids.
