    [ EN ] When the first war between France and Madagascar burst out (1883-1885) catholic missionaries were turned out of the Kingdom. While they were absent the Christian community they had founded in 1861 (under king Radama II) organized itself in order to keep on practice its faith and even, increase its audience. The present study intends to analyse an impublished document, though already known by historians of Catholicism. This document the title of which is “Tantara Ny Union Catholique by Isidore Ramahatafandry”, gives numerous details about the catholic community in Antananarivo during the hostilities.
    In the first part of this study the historical context which makes the text intelligible is briefly drawn. Then a critical approach of it is proposed. Parts of the document were sent in succession to missionaries at Tamatave as soon as they were written ; extracts were translated in French and published in 1885. Therefore exegesis is required : this “History” was probably written for the purpose of being read by missionaries, and so, choice in informations and in presentation of facts might have been made by the author. No historian can trust such a text with his eyes shut. Thus a critical comparison with other sources parallel and external to the document can give us confidence. Samely internal analysis of the document can allow us to ascertain its global trueness ; credibility can be given to this story used as a source.
    The third part of this article states the major themes to be found inside the document : catholic community’s organization, difficulties met, faith life, doctrinal bases of faith, relations between Antananarivo church and Provincial churches, relations between catholic people and Government. Summary of themes cannot take the place of direct reading of document the integral publication of which, desired by the author, might contribute to change the usual perspectives in Religious Historiography. Till now Religious Historiography has been aiming at ecclesiastical leader’s projects and policy. It may be time to write a story of the Church more concerned with common people who practice Christianity according to their own fashion and who, at last, also form the Church.
