[ EN ] In the Betsileo region circumcision can be practised individually, contrarily to the traditional customs in some peoples of the coast that organise it in a collective way. As it is an important event, the ceremony requires a series of preliminary acts, such as the consulting of an astrologue who will indicate the propitious day, the pounding of rice for the meal of the guests, and principally the preparation of the “lapa”, i.e. the house in which the ritual ceremony will take place. During the operation, the assistance has to respect a certain number of taboos, the non-observation of which would be of great nuisance to the scarification of the wound and and to future of the child. Nowadays these customs have become rare for everybody resorts more and more to doctors.
