  [ EN ] Ox-carts are essentially used in the West, the South, and the central Highlands. Each region has its own distinctive type of cart and yoke and the peasants will only bring some modifications to the model they use with much reluctance. Such attachment to “tradition” is all the more striking as carts have been recently adopted in Madagascar. They would have been used in 1830s in the sugar-cane plantations of the east coast and reintroduced and spread at the beginning of the colonial period. An ethno-technological investigation will allow the comparison of different types of carts and stress the importance of the Indian factors.
