  [ENG] Hubert DESCHAMPS reminds us of work alrcady accomplished by « our masters, the great earlier specialists on Madagascar »,and hails the new age of Archaelogy, bringing the application of the techniques of pro.ohistory to the exploration of the past : surface surveys, excavations. zoological and pollen analyses will contribute to tracing back the history of the early Malagasy from their first settlements to the 19 th century ; but beyond that, other branches of study such as occeanography, maritime technology, comparative ethnography,linguistics, physical anthropology must collaborate closely to throw light on the mystery of tlie Malagasy origins.
