  [ENG] We know to what good account O. DAHL turned the names ofthe cardinal directions in Indonesia and Madagascar. A closer investi-gation of the ancient Malagasy cosmography may contribute to theestablishment of new hypotheses on cultural history, but, up to date,our restricted knowledge has indicated that this cosmography was verylimiied. HÉBERT studies one after the other the words relating to thesky, the Sun, the rainbow, the moon, eclipses and the stars. Aniongthe latter, Magellan’s clouds played an important part in the nauticalart of the southern heinisphere, as did perhaps Orion’s Belt ; part ofthe terminology is of Indonesian origin, but the Arab element is notcworthy.
