[MG] N.Chittick dia nifotopototra izay fantany momba ny moron-dranomasina sy ny tany izay antoin’ny Grika hoe Azania sy ny Arabo Sawahil. Notantarainy izay niseho talohan’ny nahatongavan’ny Portiogey. Nolazainy koa izay voasoratry ny mpanao géographie arabo ny "Périple" ary ny tantara vitan’ny olona tany .Ny institut britannique d’archéologie dia nahita tao anaty zavatra betsaka toy ny vilany tany arabo sy sinoa , vola vita tao an-toerana , ary nisy trano sy mosikiriny (trano fivavahan’ny silamo) ary fasana izay mampiseho ny sivilizasionan’ny Silamo. Izany sivilisasiona izany anefa dia tsy nampiova ny fomba fanamboaran’ny Afrikana ( mipetraka ao afovoan’ny tany) ny trano fa mbola mijanona amin’ny maha-baribarianina azy izy ireo.

[ENG] In this article N.Chittick summarizes what is known of the cultural histiry of the coast and islands, known to the Greeks as Azania and to the Arabs as the Sawahil. He has taken the story down the time of the arrival of the Portuguese. These coasts were the most southerly region known to the Ancients ; consequently here only in Equatorial Africa do we have any historical knowledge going back to before the fifteenth century. It is a history linked more to the other lands bordering the indian Ocean than to the interior of the continent ; the sources are meagre , aften corrupt, aften half-myth.Neverthelese they can provide us with some framework of the pattern of events a framework which needs to be verified supplemented, and, cometimes modified by archeological evidence .There are sites of the Stone Age along the east African coast but no sites of the first millenium of the christian era dated before the eighth century has been discovered so far. Some pre-islamic finds are poorly documented. Islamic and Chinese ceramics are discussed and contetribute to build up the archeological sequences crosschecked for some periods by the welle-documented discoveries of local coins.Therefined architecture (mosques, houses and tombs) is described throughout time ; it is interesting to note that the construction styles were not borowed in the neaby interior.
