  [ EN ] The dispute between the Jesuits and the Freemasons at the end of the 19th century – reconstituted by the author through unpublished archivistic documents – repeats, in Madagascar, the divergence between Catholicism and Freemansonry developed in Europe. The Malagasy government could not stay aloof from this conflict of two radically opposed conceptions of the society and the state, viz. a secular conception and the conception of power closely collaborating with the churches, if not taking inspiration from their doctrines. The Prime Minister Rainilaiarivony tried to control, on the one hand, the Churches careful of their priveles, on the other hand, a Freemasonry tied up with the secularian and colonial European powers. The fact that almost all the Freemasons of Tananarive were personal friends of the Head of the government – technicians, colleagues with whom he entrusted delicate assignments – made the situation more complicated.
