    [ EN ] The holist vision which developed during the XIXth century concerning the ancient Merina society has concealed the part played by people taking the lead in social competition without the traditional assets of a family name, of seniority or of wealth. Three means of promotion are well known of this kind of men : slave trade and overseas trade which bring money, they use of new skills taught by the missionary workers of the London Missionary Society and by Jean Laborde, and last of all, the intercourse with all missionaries, the experience of being a unique person whose name was to be mentioned in letters and books by them. These different ways towards social fame succeed in producing a new respected identity only with the sanction of the state. The killing of the Menamaso, a group of dissident Malagasy engineers, and the prohibition of any publication concerning the dissident Christians and their activities during the period of persecutions give us an idea of the narrow space of liberty enjoyed by individuals. The best way towards self-determination was a military career in the shadow of the Prime Minister and chief of the army. The best way also not to be exposed to the danger of jealousy, which a brilliant career could inside the family or foko.
