  Résumé
  Une bonne santé générale est influencée par une bonne santé orale, elle-même conditionnée par une bonne hygiène orale. L’objectif de cette étude était de déterminer l’hygiène orale des patients hospitalisés en vue de rechercher l’impact de l’hospitalisation sur le niveau d’hygiène orale. Une étude épidémiologique descriptive évaluative a été menée à Madagascar au sein du centre hospitalier universitaire Professeur Zafisaona Gabriel (CHUPZaGa) à Mahajanga du mois d’octobre 2013 au mois de février 2014. Soixante-dix sujets hospitalisés âgés de 15 à 72 ans répartis dans cinq services ont été recrutés dans l’étude. Le niveau d’hygiène orale à l’entrée et à10 jours après hospitalisation ont été enregistrés en utilisant l’indice de plaque d’O’Leary. Aucune différence significative entre le niveau d’hygiène orale des patients hospitalisés à leur entrée à l’hôpital et 10 jours après l’hospitalisation n’a été trouvée. Toutefois, l’indice moyen de plaque à l’entrée était de l’ordre de 92% traduisant une hygiène orale déjà défectueuse à l’état initial. Ce niveau d’hygiène orale est resté mauvais durant l’hospitalisation. Nous avons constaté que ni, le service d’hospitalisation, ni le motif d’hospitalisation, ni la catégorie d’hospitalisation n’avaient d’influence sur le niveau d’hygiène orale des hospitalisés encore moins sur sa dégradation durant l’hospitalisation. L’hygiène orale a été ainsi négligée par les patients ayant nécessité une hospitalisation et aussi pendant leur hospitalisation. Cette étude souligne l’importance d’une prise en compte de l’hygiène orale avant, pendant et après hospitalisation pour une meilleure prise en charge de nos patients.

  Abstract
  Good general health is influenced by good oral health, itself conditioned by good oral hygiene. The aim of this study was to determine the oral hygiene of patients hospitalized to investigate the impact of hospitalization on the level of oral hygiene.
  An evaluative descriptive epidemiological study was conducted in Madagascar University Hospital Zafisaona Gabriel (CHUPZaGa) Mahajanga from October 2013 to February 2014. Seventy hospitalized subjects 15 to 72 years old distributed in five services were recruited in the study. The level of oral hygiene to entry and after 10 days of hospitalization was recorded using O’Leary index plaque.
  We found no significant difference between the level of oral hygiene to the patient in hospital admission and 10 days after hospitalization. Nevertheles, the average index plaque at the entrance was around 92%, reflecting an oral hygiene already defective at the baseline. This level of oral hygiene remained poor during hospitalization. We found that neither the hospital service nor the reason for hospitalization nor the hospitalization category had any influence on the level of oral hygiene hospitalized even less degradation during hospitalization. Oral hygiene was being neglected by patients requiring hospitalization and also during their hospitalization .This study highlights the importance of taking into account the oral hygiene before, during and after hospitalization for better management of our patients.
