  [ EN ] This reflection on the way space is occupied is based on the study of a few examples taken from Eastern and Northern Imerina. In the Vakiniadiana, history has played a fundamental role and created habits which keep holding out against today’s logical conception of economy. In the village of Mangarano, the old social social organization account for the present land structure as well as for the tensions between antagonistic groups which brought about the decline of hydraulics in farming. In the region of Anjozorobe, the way the population is spread is suggestive of a settlement established at the beginning of the nineteenth century by King Andrianampoinimerina. Thus, space which is the sphere of geographers must also be perceived as “a sphere for historians”.
