  [ EN ] Even in the limits strictly mediterranean as one understands it in the West, teaching of ancient history has been justified all over the world ; although one must fit the programs of which to the different local audiences. In Madagascar, it is proper to take into account some special aspects of the island-protohistory for its peopling puts the focus on all around the Indian Ocean. But the first steps do not seem to date back to the beginning of our era.
  In order to interest Malagasy in the study of ancient history whose Greek and Roman part remains an important element, it would be more advisable to assign to it the three following aims :
  1) extension in an universal view that restores in their place the Indian Ocean and East Asia ;
  2) choice of universalist themes such as the History of Discovery and Knowledge of the World, to which it is easy to connect the problems referring to malagasy origins ;
  3) setting the focus on the links between “classical” and Indian Ocean antiquities, owing to preferential study of the Egypto-Asiatic Near-East.
  The department of History at the University of Madagascar has already adopted these aims ; the University must keep the former up by creation of new linguistic teaching necessary for future original researches on the past of the Indian Ocean.
