  [ EN ] The sakalava royal funeral constitutes a total social fact. As soon as the king’s death is announced, everyday activity is stopped. The different social groups prepare their own tasks : drums and songs, preparation of the corpse, making of the coffin. Burying itself, after complete dessication of the corpse, give rise to orgies and unrestrained bacchanals. A human sacrifice must be accomplished too. Those facts are interpreted as a renewal of world and society in the passage from death to life. But nowadays those rites are contested by new ways of life and thinking.
