[ENG] For all times, the family is at the basis of most society. It is the space where individual characters are built. However, in today’s world, family values are undergoing some deep and drastic transformations that are affecting interpersonal relationships. Literature, in its role of social mirror, serves as a catalyst reflecting this ever-evolving society and projects our humanity at its best or its worst. In his play, La Retraite (1990), Malagasy writer David Jaomanoro chose the lens of absurd humour to reveal his vision of the distorted values that are gnawing at the core of the Malagasy family. He delivers a sharp socio-economic, political and cultural critique of a corrupt society through the combination of a dynamic set of characters, a surreal plot and a peculiar narrative presence designed to produce some tragi-comic effect.
