[ EN ] French colonial system increased to a great extent the number of the Malagasy elites and gave them new impetus. These elites comprised “the social groups which dominated society through their influence, their prestige, their political, cultural and economic power”. They particularly came to the fore in politics during the interwar years. As they were trained to assist the colonial system, acting as links between the government and its subjects, they knew ho to take advantage of their position which became a strategic one. Empowered to represent the State, they proclaimed themselves representatives of the people when circumstancies suited them. Their ambiguous status made them benefit greatly by independance.
