    [ EN ] Simon Ayache introduces a literate, almost modern historian when Imerina was barely on the threshold of literacy in the first half of the Nineteenth century. Sent to study in England as a boy of eleven, Raombana returned to Antananarivo eight years later to become ultimately secretary to Queen Ranavalona I. Imerina’s first archivist, and somewhat clandestine author of the first “rationalistic and critical construct of national past, written in English but entirely Malagasy otherwise”, altogether some 8.000 manuscript pages. Friend of Europe and precursor of nationalism, high Merina noble to whom no door was closed, Raombana broke entirely with traditional methods of dealing with history and applied the critical method to his study of all the text rigorously collected as well. It is the author’s belief that Raombana might just be a culture hero for all the Malagasy of today. He was the first modern intellectual, the earliest advocate of the need to incorporate all of the Malagasy into the Merina state without resort to arms, and certainly a Malagasy who could work out within himself and his culture a synthesis of the two worlds, “modern” and “traditional”.
