  [ EN ] By resorting to oral traditions, and to re-reading Arab, Persian and Turk writers on the Mozambique Channel and the islands, as well as to recent archeological findings, the notions of state and power in the South-West of the Indian Ocean need to be revised. Indeed, the notion of state-city in the archipelago dates back to the first Bantu settlements on the African coast with which Arab traders associated to constitute the Swahili corridor. On the other hand, the notion of bridgehead pertains to Austronesian influence which might have started from Madagascar and reached the archipelago on its peripheries. Archeological findings show a cultural crossbreeding which would have started in the 8th century.
