Characteristics of Nesting Sites of Chelonia Mydas and Eretmochelys Imbricata in the North-East of Madagascar

[ENG] This study, carried out in 2018 and 2019, contributes to the establishment of a database on the habitat and populations of sea turtles in the sites of Ampombofofo, Ambodivahibe and Ambolobozokely in the North-East of Madagascar where little research has been conducted. The tracks of turtles were counted, the distance of location of the nests compared to the measured tide, the species of turtles are identified according to their track, their GPS coordinates and the remains of shells noted during the rapid assessment descents of these spawning beaches. Two species (Chelonia mydas and Eretmochelys imbricata) showed a significant difference in nest location relative to tide level during the rainy season (January to March) and during the winter season (June). For Chelonia mydas, the location distance of the nests from the tide is between 0.5 and 24 m (n = 45) with a mean = 6.34 and standard deviation = 5.52, during the rainy season. During the dry season, it is between 4.5 m and 8.32 m (n = 23) with a mean = 13.85 and standard deviation = 8.31. For Eretmochelys imbricata, it is between 2.70 m and 24.5 m (n = 12) in the rainy season, mean = 10.25 m and standard deviation = 5.47 m and in the dry season between 07 and 25 .20 m (n = 8), mean = 16.82 m and standard deviation = 7.22. Thus these sites must be protected for the turtles that come to lay there.
