  [ EN ] The various studies on the currency used in Madagascar before and/or during the colonial rule are, after all, merely works on numismatics with the purposes of making its nature, composition, and evolution known. The framework of this contribution is the study of the relationships between currency and State at the end of the pre-colonial regime and at the beginning of the colonial rule. Indeed, France proceeded to eliminate progressively other currencies, as early as the royal period. However, at the beginning of the colonial rule, France had not yet succeeded in this effort. Is it an evidence of negligence or an evidence of colonial mediocrity ? Whatever the case may be, the French divisionary currencies brought to the island were not sufficient. They were quickly replaced by cardboard currency during the war. The colony had to wait until the beginning of the 1920s before it really was in keeping with the metropolis : the true start of the French State’s sovereignty on her colony in terms of currency.
