[EN] Since the end of the last century, an increasing number of people have settle for purposes of cultivation in the vast, thinly populated, grassy expanses of the Malagasy middle-West, a movement originating in the influx from the populated areas of the eastern Plateaux. In the present article are analysed both the course taken by the immigrants when settling and the development of a landscape on to which agricultural orderings have brought the imprint of man – this a connection with a monograph dealing with the area Antanety-Ambohidava (Prefecture of Antsirabe). After describing the demographic situation and the social orders depending on the various arrivals of cultivators, agrarian structures are analysed in relation to the description of the area’s maps. Lastly, the study of the traditional cultural system allows us to foresee that before long the present mode of cultivation will come to a halt, owing on the one hand to the fact that the land suitable for rice-fields has been used up, on the other hand to the burden of a growing population. The conclusion is that the area cannot welcome any more settlers and that the precariousness of the balance between production and requirements must be overcome by the introduction of better cultural techniques.
