[EN] Morondava is a port of Madagascar on the Mozambique Channel. It has a sandy, low, unstable coast, and lies on the axis of a river delta between a split river-bed, one arm of which periodically captures the river-flow from the other. Severe marine erosion began in 1952 and within twelve years has destroyed part of the town, including the coast-road, the lighthouse, several houses and a harbour wharf. The town was immediately protected by rock (subsequently concreted) groynes oriented perpendicularly to the coast, without the causes of sudden erosion having been understood. In a following article, the author will study the causes of this marine erosion.
