  [ EN ] Close and distant at the same time, the dog is given pride of place in the oral Betsimisaraka literature known as söva or jijy. This literary type, with a mere entertaining function is what Marcel Mauss understands as a “total social act”.
  The analysis of a söva about the dog allows the reader to understand the economic and social value of this animal among the Betsimisaraka-Antavaratra : there, symbolism becomes all important. Any taboos are attached to the dog, a vile and inferior animal. So, the worst insults for the Betsimisaraka-Antavaratra are those connected with the dog.
